Why am I in the Removal Proceedings?

I have been married to a U. S. citizen for two and half years. I have recently discovered that I am in the removal proceedings. I came to U. S. as a F-1 student and filed an adjustment of status before my completion of study. Am I just caught in a red tape or am I in the big trouble? Does anyone have a similar situation?
