How can you "approach infinity"?

Not a mathematician here so I don't know if I am asking this right. If your on the x, y or z axis and the math problem says something about "as you approach infinity", how is that possible? Aren't you always infinity away from infinity? I mean, isn't "infinity +/-(n)" still infinity?
