How do you update a driver?

I was told to update the driver. beacuse when I put a cd in my windows xp laptop I received an error saying Windows Explorer in the top bar. than it said D:/is not accessible the disk structure is corrupted and unreadable. I tired this on 2 different disk. Than tired to burn some music cds on the window xp laptop. It would let some of the cds burn the music and others it wouldn't. All these cds are from the same pack. So how do update the driver.
