Can I switch from carb to tpi???

I have a 1987 carbureted 305 camaro that I want to convert to tuned port injection. I feel like at such a disadvantage with the 4bblcarb cuz it runs slower than 4 bangers stock and it eats up my gas. They're is not much I can do to it keeping it smog legal, so I want to switch it to tpi to get more power and give it more potential. Apart from the actual injectors intake and all the essential parts from a kit I can buy what else will I need. I already found kits like that online used for a good price. I heard i might need new heads, and distributor. Can I do it myself or do I have to take it to a mechanic?? I'm no pro, I can un bolt and put stuff in I just don't wanna pay too much if I can do it myself. Thanks
